Are you interested in the sea as a cultural and historical resource? Fascinated by shipwrecks and submerged settlements? The new postgraduate programme in Maritime Archaeology is designed for students who are interested in a professional career in maritime archaeology and heritage management. Based in Esbjerg on the Danish North Sea coast, the programme is internationally oriented and all teaching is in English.

A two-year masters programmeThe two-year masters programme was created with employability in mind. Our aim is not just to provide an education in maritime archaeology, but to prepare you for a career in this field. The course is structured around skills which are necessary in the fields of heritage management, consultancy and archaeological contract work, but also benefit students who want to follow a more traditional research oriented career path.

Commercial diver trainingAt the University of Southern Denmark students have the opportunity to obtain an internationally recognised commercial SCUBA diving qualification at very low cost. As an approved commercial diving school, the masters programme can issue the Danish “SCUBA erhvervsdykker” certificate (equivalent to HSE SCUBA).

Interested? As education is free in Denmark, the maritime archaeology masters course is free of charge for students from European Union/EEA countries. Only students from outside the EU/EEA are charged an annual tuition fee.

Contents

The Maritime Archaeology Masters programme is a two year full time course, equivalent to 120 ECTS. It is internationally oriented and all courses are taught in English. Degree

On successful completion you will be awarded the title Master of Arts in Maritime Archaeology (In Danish cand.mag. i Marinarkæologi).

Organisation

The programme consists of nine courses of 10 ECTS each. The final master thesis is equivalent to 30 ECTS. Semesters start in September and February, with exams normally being held in June and January.

The programme provides a thorough understanding of Maritime Archaeology, in both its practical and theoretical aspects. Students are encouraged to use empirical and theoretical approaches in examining the cultural and historical importance of the sea. The programme also gives students splendid opportunities to work with the broad spectrum of methods in the field of maritime heritage. These include introductions to both the theory and practice of underwater surveying, remote sensing and field conservation.
At the University of Southern Denmark, we also believe it is important to give students a solid basis in management, which so often proves essential in careers in heritage management but also in museums, government institutions or elsewhere in the heritage industry.
With international teaching staff with backgrounds in heritage management, commercial diving and contract archaeology, our aim is not just to provide an education in maritime archaeology but to prepare you for a career in this field.

Diving

The commercial diving course is offered jointly with the Masters course, but does not generate ECTS credits. The course runs over the duration of two years and includes theory lessons as well as around 16 to 20 hours of underwater time in different environments
