For more than 18 years, the Europainstitute has offered an interdisciplinary postgraduate programme of study leading to the diploma "Master of Advanced Studies in European Integration (MAS)" (formerly "Master of Advanced European Studies (MAES)"). With only a few exceptions, the compulsory and advanced courses are offered exclusively for students of this programme. Excellent lecturers and experts from science and the practical field ensure a high quality programme in an international environment. The limited number of study places available guarantees that students are provided with individual supervision. The programme is offered in English only, or also with classes taken in German; so a good working knowledge English is required and German necessary for the bilingual track.
The highlights of the MAS in European Integration:
The goal is a broad and practice-oriented understanding of the European Union and its institutions. Individual supervision and efficient course sizes help to achieve this aim.
Full-time (1-year course) or part-time option (2-year course)
The programme can be studied in one or two years. More information is available in the relevant subsection.
Specialisation (Major)
Two attractive certified specialisations are on offer: a Major in International Business and a Major in Conflict and Development. The Majors can be taken independently of the MAS. More information is available in the relevant subsection.
Course modules
Courses take place in condensed two to three-day units in the second half of the week, including Saturdays.
The study programme is made up of three parts:
I. Compulsory modules (autum term)
The compulsory introductory modules in the three main subjects – politics, economics and law – provide students with an overview of the fundamentals of European integration.
II. Advanced modules (spring term)
Students put together their individual programme from a selection of courses. Each advanced module belongs to a focal area such as migration and human rights, competition in the EU, foreign and security policy, European Law Moot Court, conflicts and gender, social and labour market policy or globalisation.
III. Master’s thesis (spring term, especially June and July)
The degree is concluded with the master’s thesis. The thesis covers a personally chosen topic in the area of European integration and is ideally linked to the student’s intended or existing occupation. To obtain a Major-certificate in "Conflict & Development" or "International Business", the Master’s thesis must be written on a topic related to the respective Major.
Diploma "MAS in European Integration"
To be awarded the MAS-diploma, a student must obtain 60 credit points. The basis for awarding points is the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). 20 Credit Points (CP) are awarded for completing all compulsory modules, 6 CP for the Master's Thesis. The remaining 34 CP may be obtained by combining optional units (advanced modules). The Diploma "Master of Advanced Studies in European Integration" is jointly awarded by the Faculties of Law, Humanities and Economics. It is recognized internationally.
Study trips & extra events
Optional excursions to Geneva, Strasbourg, Luxembourg and Brussels complement the programme, as do colloquia, conventions and contacts to businesses and trade associations.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

The Europainstitute offers its students advice on applying for study grants. As a rule, students must apply for study grants from their country of origin; in certain cases, they must do so up to 1 year in advance. Swiss candidates resident in Switzerland apply for grants from their canton of residence. Swiss candidates living abroad should apply for grants from their canton of origin.
If necessary, the 'Förderverein' of the Europainstitute can provide students with limited study grants.
