Architectural engineers are involved in all facets of designing buildings and building systems, including planning, structural form finding, structural design, design of services, building envelopes, indoor climate, fire safety and acoustics.

MSc graduates in architectural engineering at DTU combine in-depth knowledge of engineering technology with the ability to work closely with other professionals in building design. Where a traditional MSc in Civil Engineering has high competences in the analysis and documentation of final designs, the MSc in Architectural Engineering from DTU is specially well-equipped to participate in early phases of a design process, where important decisions about the overall shape, structure, and functionality of the building are decided on the basis of limited information. This calls for a good basic understanding of the behavior of buildings and structures and for an ability to define and treat simple engineering models leading to conclusions concerning constructability and performance based on a minimum of parameters.

The MSc education in Architectural Engineering offers study-lines in structural and functional design. Additional individual specialization is possible through elective courses comprising a variety of subjects such as structural glazing, seismic design, light structures, facades, acoustics, lighting, construction management, and town planning. It is also possible to earn an MSc in Architectural Engineering without a study-line. The MSc in Architectural Engineering imparts a number of general competences common to all students in contrast with the optional study-lines. The former comprise advanced building design, integrated design, component design, fire safety, building acoustics, and a general knowledge about the technology of the study-lines

Contents

The MSc education in Architectural Engineering currently offers specializations in structural design and in functional design. Additional individual specialization is possible through the Elective Courses comprising a variety of subjects such as bridge design, structural glazing, seismic design, wind engineering, facades, acoustics, fire safety and services for heating, lighting, water supply, drain and sewers as well as town plans.

Within each study line, it is possible to choose between various courses and thereby gain special competencies or follow recommended programs of study.

Master Study Lines
Structural Design
Functional design

The master education in Architectural Engineering gives the general specialisation competences of building design and architecture through project oriented work in which emphasis is on both synthesis and in depth study of the technological engineering problems. The technological courses which are relevant for structural design and functional design can with great advantage be grouped and chosen as proposed in the specialisations. The possibility of individual specialisation exists through the elective courses.

The program is completed through a Master Thesis relevant for the program. It is also possible to make a project at another department and in this case the subject of the project must be approved by the program coordinator. The work load of the project should correspond to 30, 35, 40, 45 or 50 ECTS points and the calendar time spent must be at least 6 months - more for larger projects. The Master Thesis and the Elective Courses must comprise 60 ECTS points altogether.

Requirements

Applicants who have completed DTU´s 3,5-year B Eng in Architectural Engineering are qualified for this program with the following supplementary requirements.

It is required that at least 10 ECTS points from among the following courses form part of their program before the master education is started:

* Advanced Engineering Mathematics 2
* Probability theory
* Statistical Quality Control
* Introduction to Numerical Algorithms
* Introduction to Operations Research
* The Finite Element Method

Applicants from other Bachelor programs and from other universities , e.g. Bachelors in Arctic Technology, Architectural Engineering or Civil Engineering, can qualify themselves through an individual DTU assessment of their qualifications within architecture and design, as well as history of architecture and the background of architectural engineering.

To be assessed, it is required that the applicants have achieved a bachelor degree like the DTU bachelor of Architectural Engineering, which encompasses the following elements:

* Architecture and design
* History of architecture and the background of architectural engineering
* Physics and mathematics incl. differential equations
* CAD and the Finite Element Method
* Building materials
* Structural design in steel, concrete, and wood
* Building physics including heat and moisture transport

Qualifications within architecture and design as well as history of architecture and the background of architectural engineering may be achieved through a visiting study at an architectural or architectural engineering education elsewhere.

Including the above requirements, Bachelor applicants are only admitted if they have achieved at least 10 ECTS points from among the six courses mentioned as supplementary requirements.

All other applicants should submit IELTS or TOEFL test results. Applications are only recognized if score reports are sent directly to DTU from the test centres.

The requirements are:

* TOEFL paper-based: 573
* TOEFL computer-based: 230
* TOEFL internet-based: 88
* IELTS: 6.5

NOTE: If you have received English medium instruction in another country than those stated above, DTU only recognizes your application if TOEFL or IELTS score reports are submitted. Test results should be received no later than July 1st. Applicants should register for tests as soon as possible, since the number of test dates and seats at each test centre is limited.
