The Biochemical Engineer is the key expert in the application of biological organisms, systems or processes. His/her skills are crucial to the commercial development of new drugs, hormones, vaccines and antibodies, as well as the manufacture of food and drink.
The Biochemical Engineering programme, with a total of 120 ECTS credit points, is a combination of teaching modules, group assignments, a conceptual design project and independent experimentation and research. The curriculum is built around a core of fundamental chemical engineering modules.
The core curriculum is supplemented by additional modules on topics relating to either process engineering or biological science, depending on the individual student’s wishes. Naturally there are elective credits available to enable the student to deepen or broaden his/her particular knowledge in a chosen area.
The research thesis will be based on the student's interests and the recommendations of the head of the research group. This thesis places the same emphasis on original, independent research as a PhD thesis but is smaller in scope. The research culminates in an oral defence of the written thesis. BSc graduates with a background in chemical engineering ordinarily complete these requirements in 24 months.
