This programme will provide students with knowledge and understanding of European and world history in the 20th century. It will also equip you with the research skills to read and assess relevant primary sources, the ability to carry out independent research and to write up your research. By the end of the programme you will have acquired the skills and the knowledge to progress to a PhD.
Our MA in Contemporary History will be attractive to students pursuing a route into MPhil and PhD research, but it also offers a varied programme for those who are undecided about future career direction.
Learning, teaching and assessment
Learning and teaching takes place via seminars, tutorials, work on primary sources, reading texts on theory and methods. You are assessed by a 12,000-word dissertation and 4,000 word assessed essays.
Compulsory modules include Mass Society and Modernity, Globalisation since 1945, and a 12,000-word dissertation. Students will also select a number of optional modules, which will vary from year to year according to staff leave.
