This new MA programme draws on the diverse expertise of medievalists at Birmingham. It provides an excellent balance of core, foundation modules and elements of choice which allow you to tailor your studies.
The programme provides sufficient breadth and depth to cater equally well for applicants with only moderate background knowledge and for those who have already studied the middle ages at undergraduate level and wish to gain a solid springboard for further research in medieval history. The MA can be studied on a full-time (12 months) or part-time basis (24 months).
Core modules include:
* Approaches to Medieval History
* Themes in Medieval History
* Historical Methods
* 12,000-word dissertation
There will be a range of optional modules to be chosen subject to staff resources in a given year.
Learning, teaching and assessment
Learning and teaching takes place via seminars, tutorials, work on primary sources, and reading texts on theory and methods. You are assessed via the 12,000-word dissertation and essays.
Careers
This programme will be attractive to students pursuing a route into both PhD research and careers, as well as catering for those whose first degree did not contain significant elements of medieval history and for whom this programme will provide evidence of advanced achievement in a humanities discipline to a variety of employers. The part-time route will be attractive to a wide range of professionals, such as those in the heritage or education sectors who are seeking a CPD qualification.
