The master programme in Art History provides research and practice-oriented education in art history, covering the following main areas of specialisation: medieval and pre-modern art, early modern art, modern and contemporary art, and architecture. The programme addresses the full range of visual arts in the Western tradition, ranging from early Christian to contemporary art. Two new chairs have offered an additional range of lectures and courses in Textile Arts and World Art History from autumn 2009. The main objectives of the programme are the analysis of complex historical and stylistic phenomena, a critical methodology, and insights into academic research and professional practice in art history. These aims are pursued through seminar and lecture courses with a broad methodological scope and a careful selection of topics. The institute encourages research of the historical and social conditions of artistic practice as well as the analysis of art theory and historiographical models.
