The MA in Eastern European Studies approaches the region of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union from an interdisciplinary angle. Its main focus lies on the evolution of this region during the twentieth century and on contemporary issues (e. g. questions of cultural, political and social transformation, democratisation, and nationalities). The core subjects taught are cultural studies, history, political science and social anthropology of Eastern Europe. In addition, the acquisition of at least one Eastern European language is requested. The programme is structured into four modules (one for each core subject) which consist of a lecture, a seminar and a written paper. To finish the studies, students concentrate on one core subject. The courses are taught in German, English and French. Professional outcome: Diplomacy, international organisations, development agencies, journalism, interdisciplinary experts of regional issues. The MA collaborates closely with the University of Fribourg and has international connections. Target: The MA in Eastern European Studies is aimed at students interested in Eastern Europe (slavicists, historians, political scientists, anthropologists).
