The programme aims to provide research in the field of classical and protohistoric archaeology of the Mediterranean world, as well as basic research and theoretical and methodological innovation in new programmes and projects.
General knowledge of classical culture and its historical interpretation. The course includes broad experimental training in the form of excavation techniques and data recording and analysis.
The second year provides greater specialisation, with concentrated courses in order to facilitate student mobility.

* Methodological and professional training as an archaeologist, and preparation for research in protohistoric Mediterranean archaeology, Greek and Roman archaeology and the Late Antiquity.
* Theoretical and practical experience in field archaeology (surveys, archaeological digs, etc.) with good knowledge of recording methods and systems.
* Technical archaeological analysis of historical monuments.
* Understanding and applying the methods and techniques of regional archaeology.
* Understanding the material culture of ancient Mediterranean societies.
* Learning technical, topographic and architectural drawing skills and photography, and using electronic databases.
* Knowledge of current areas of research in archaeology.
* Basic training in archaeological heritage management.
* Basic training in the management of cultural projects related to archaeological heritage, especially with regard to dissemination strategies and its social use.

Teaching timetable
Lectures will be held on mornings and afternoons at the UAB Faculty of Philosophy and Arts for GROUP 1 students and at Rovira i Virgili University for GROUP 2 students. Both groups will also attend lectures at the Catalan Institute of ClassicalArchaeology.

Ideal student profile
Students specialising in Archaeology have generally taken their undergraduate studies in History or Art History. Some students may come from other related degrees such as Humanities, Classics, Cultural Anthropology or even any other university degree, provided that they meet the prior training requirements specified in the admission criteria.
Admission
* Three-year or four-year degree in History or Art History or another equivalent university degree.
* Applicants with other university studies must have earned at least 24 ECTS credits from subjects with the following content: History and Archaeology of Ancient Civilisations (18 ECTS credits) and Introduction to an Ancient Language (6 ECTS credits).
* You must have basic knowledge of at least two of the languages used in the master'sdegree (Italian, French, and Catalan or Spanish).
Selection criteria
Selection is based on the criteria for the Erasmus Mundus programme regarding academic excellence, motivation and professional objectives. The selection committee will apply the following criteria:
* Student record: 50%
* Ancient languages: 10%
* Modern languages: 20%
* Experience in field archaeology: 20%
The committee reserves the right to use admission exams in which candidates must demonstrate their knowledge in history, archaeology and ancient civilisations and their languages.
