This Master is biennial and would offer pre-enrolment again for the year 2013/2014. You will find the information from January 2013.

This master's degree aims to be a first step in making Egyptology, or the scientific study of different aspects of ancient Egyptian civilisation, an officially recognised academic discipline.

The contents of the master's degree will provide you with extensive knowledge of the theoretical and conceptual concepts belonging to the different areas of knowledge in Egyptology, multidisciplinary by definition and ranging from language study and textual criticism to history, archaeology, thought and culture in general.

The use of methods pertaining to the discipline of Egyptology; in particular those used when working directly with written, iconographic and material sources.

The application of acquired knowledge to research in Egyptology and the Middle East in general, and to archaeological and epigraphical work in Egypt.

Critical reflections when consulting resources on Egyptology and the scientific problems encountered, and the skills needed to communicate your knowledge and conclusions to both expert and non-expert audiences.

Skills acquired

Once you have finished this master's degree you will able to read and interpret texts in Middle and Late Egyptian containing hieroglyphs and hieratic, as well as texts in Demotic and Coptic; and critically study these texts as resources in the political, social and cultural history of Egypt. This will enable you to describe and analyse historical processes and political, economic and social policies, archaeological vestiges and artistic and spiritual traditions of Ancient Egypt.

You will also be prepared to assess new trends in Egyptology studies (sociological, anthropological and gender studies) and begin to use specific research methods and techniques in Egyptology and acquire the skills needed to continue your learning process independently.

Ideal student profile

The ideal profile is a student with basic knowledge of grammar (in their language) and of the humanities, with an interest and ability to study dead languages, history, archaeology, history of art and religions, and with a sensitivity towards cultures governed by mythical religious beliefs.

Admission

* EHEA degree or equivalent.

There is no need to have previous knowledge in this area since many universities in Catalonia and Spain do not offer undergraduate studies in Egyptology. Those who have studied Classical Egyptian as part of their undergraduate syllabus or in another centre can validate this knowledge for the Introductory Course in Classical Egyptian offered in the first module of the master's degree.

The fact that Ancient Egypt is appealing to a variety of people from different academic backgrounds is also a reason why students of all types of degrees can enrol in this master's degree.
