This master'sdegree is designed to introduce students to interdisciplinary research on language and cognition. As an inter-university programme, it consists of a wide academic platform formed by lecturers and researchers in cognitivescience from five Catalan universities. The work carried out by the researchers focuses on a variety of aspects related to natural language, such as its computational processing, its psychological and neurological bases, and its grammar and philosophy.
The master'sdegree is divided into three fields corresponding to three branches of language research: Linguistics, Philosophy and Psychology. All of the researchers specialise in issues related to these fields and within the framework of cognitivescience. The first-year course for each of the fields aims at providing you with deeper knowledge of each of its sections. The second-year course is an introduction to the interdisciplinary research on language and cognition, and will prepare you for research in the field of cognitivescience.
Training objectives
The programme provides an introduction to research into lanuguage and cognition from three scientific perspectives: linguistics, cognitivepsychology and analytic philosophy. This means you receive interdisciplinary training so that during your research in one perspective you are able to monitor contributions from the other two perspectives, which is a vital element to your research. The programme provides the possibility to obtain interdisciplinary advanced academic training in these three fields.
Skills acquired
* Understand the principles that shape cognitivescience as an interdisciplinary field combining the interactions found in linguistic, psycholinguistic and philosophical perspectives.
* Analyse and reflect on each of the levels and components that make up the structure and functions of natural language.
* Critical expertise of the main theories in the study of the mind.
* Critical expertise of the problems raised in analytic philosophy.
* Knowledge of the basic principles of natural language processing and practical skills to work in this field.
* Ability to develop basic or applied research skills in one of the fields of cognitivescience.
