International and European Tax Law focuses on corporate taxation and international tax planning. Its multidisciplinary approach combines tax law, European law, business and politics.

The programme is for students with a bachelor's in financial law, economics, business administration or a related field. Students gain insight into the interdependence of corporate structures, investment, cross-border employment and tax law. Tax law forms the core of the programme. A broad range of economic, legal and social topics are discussed from the perspective of international and European tax law. Students gain a hands-on approach by discussing and solving real-life tax problems and cases. The master International and European Tax Law is an intensive, one-year programme taught entirely in English. This programme is accessible to students from all over the world who have a basic knowledge of the tax system of their home country or country of previous studies. For students with a solid background in Dutch tax law our programme offers the possibility of taking an advanced Dutch course in corporation tax instead of a comparative course in corporate taxation in order to comply with the relevant requirements set by Dutch professional organisations.

Contents

The Maastricht Law Faculty offers a one-year intensive programme that covers all bases of international and European tax law. This programme is part of our LL.M in Tax Law programme.

It focuses on corporate taxation and international tax planning. Its multidisciplinary approach, combining tax law, European law, business and politics will prove to be of great value for prospective students. This Master is suited for bachelor students with a background in law, (financial) economics or business administration who want to get an insight in the interdependence of corporate structures, investment, cross-border employment and tax law.

Tax law forms the core of the programme, and a broad range of economic, legal and other social matters are discussed from the perspective of tax law. An emphasis on interdisciplinary aspects has been an important characteristic of Universiteit Maastricht (UM) from its inception, and this is also realised via the problem-based learning method used. It provides for a hands-on approach to tax law in which small student groups, led by an experienced tutor, discuss and solve real-life tax problems and cases.

For students with a solid background in Dutch tax law (like a Bachelor´s degree in Tax Law or Fiscal Economics) our programme offeres the possibility to go more deeply into issues of International and European Tax Law. For this group we offer the possibility of taking an advanced Dutch course in corporation tax instead of a comparative course in corporate taxation in order to comply with the relevant requirements set by Dutch professional organisations. We also offer an alternative `Tax Lawyer´ track taught in Dutch and English for students who would like to focus on Dutch Tax Law in particular.

Teaching method

One of the main reasons for the strong reputation enjoyed by the Faculty of Law at Universiteit Maastricht is the quality of the education provided. Important characteristics of the teaching method at this faculty are internationalisation and the problem-based focus.

The problem-based focus is apparent in the teaching method used: problem-based learning (PBL). The Faculty has used this teaching method since its inception. This, however, does not mean that nothing ever changes. The educational programmes are assessed on a regular basis and, if necessary, adjusted.

International orientation

The international aspect of the education given is evident from, for example, the large number of non-Dutch scholars who are members of the Faculty. Of course, the regular teaching courses also devote a great deal of attention to international aspects of law. European legislation, in particular, is becoming increasingly important in this regard.

Internship (work placement)

Another important resource for acquiring legal skills is an internship. An internship is not required, but many students make use of this opportunity to gain practical experience. The Faculty´s internship office has an extensive list of work placement options with law offices, the court system, various businesses, government bodies and the police.

Work placement can also be done outside the Netherlands. Studying for a period of time outside the Netherlands is also an option. Within the framework of organised student exchanges, students have the option of studying at various faculties in Germany, Belgium, France, England, Portugal, Spain, Canada, Greece, Turkey, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden and Finland. Of course, the credits earned during such a study also count towards the programme being followed at UM. Exchange students receive a limited scholarship to help defray the costs of travel and accommodation.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
