The master's degree in Health Information and Knowledge Management (MGICAS) offers professional training by providing profound knowledge of the complexity of health institutions and their information systems, preparing students with the capacities of designing, managing, implementing and assessing these systems both at departamental and institutional levels. They will also be able to understand the complexity of systems through critical reasoning and argumented analysis of problem-solving decisions proposed bearing in mind social and ethical responsibilities.

Skills acquired

* Thorough knowledge of the complexity of health institutes and their information systems, taking into account the strategic value at both institutional level and the health system as a whole with the aim of satisfying institutional needs in terms of information and knowledgemanagement.
* Applying acquired knowledge and skills for the design of information and knowledgemanagement systems, developing decision-making and complex problem-solving strategies which include reflections on social and ethical responsabilities.
* Expressing opinions and evaluations based on data gathered in the analysis of the requirements formulated by the health institute with the aim of designing, implementing and assessing the suitability of information and knowledgemanagement systems, as well as directing implementation processes of information systems in the area of health. Conducting the change management needed by this implementation.
* Communicating correctly and effectively within a multidisciplinary context, both orally and in writing, and critically reasoning proposals, adapting to the level of responsibility and specialisation of your public.
* Developing learning strategies based on independent work and demonstrating iniative and the ability to adapt to new situations in a creative manner.

Specific skills

* Demonstrating knowledge on health institutes as complex organisational models and the configuration of management systems and care service information by identifying key elements.
* Conceptualising the strategic character of information systems in health institutes as tools aimed at planning and control tasks.
* Demonstrating knowledge related to concepts of management of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in the health area and analysing technology management concepts; structure of ICTs, integration systems, databases and use of standards.
* Being familiar with the legislative framework governing the use of ICTs in the health field and reflecting upon related ethical and social connotations.
* Applying skills connected to Electronic Clinical History (ECH) contents for the conceptualisation in different health care areas and for the design of new clinical registers.
* Demonstrating skills related to the clinical documentation and coding standards, developing abilities for the access, consultation and use of clinical and care management databases.
* Developing abilities in the use of support tools for clinical decisions, use of information and quality assessment.
* Applying your knowledge and skills acquired to the planning and implementation of information systems and developing the tools needed for change management.
* Applying and integrating your skills during the work placement.


Contents

The first two modules are taken during the first term. The second term consists of the work placement module and the Master Thesis.

Requirements

Ideal student profile

The master's degree is addressed to university graduates in Health Science and Engineering degrees. Nevertheless, given the orientation and structure of the course it is also very profitable for univerity degree holders in other fields interested in focusing their professional activities towards information and knowledgemanagement in the health field, and for professionals already carrying out tasks in this area.

Admission

To enrol in the master's degree you must hold a four-year or EHEA degree, preferably in Health Sciences or Engineering.

Selection criteria

If more students apply than places are available the following criteria will be taken into account:

* Previous studies: priority will be given to degrees in health sciences and engineering (65%).
* Professional work experience. The selection committee will also assess any other work experience you may have (35%).
