SELECT strives to be one of the world's most highly recognized master's programmes in the energy field by 2015. The programme shall attract top performing students from around the globe and deliver the right type of engineering graduates to advance leadership, industrial practice, innovation and entrepreneurship in the field. Thus, the SELECT atmosphere and learning environment should foster thinking on global responsibilities and sustainable development for all.
The SELECT master's programme is presently a cooperation between the Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden (KTH), Politecnico di Torino (PoliTo), Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands (TUE), Technical University of Catalonia in Spain (UPC) and Aalto University in Finland (Aalto). SELECT is also part of the InnoEnergy Sustainable Energy masters programme and as such new partner universities and study tracks are being incorporated at the present time. It is a two-year Master's programme including compulsory mobility for the students.
SELECT is powered by scholarships opportunities from Erasmus Mundus, as well as the EIT KIC InnoEnergy. Students from all over the world are welcome to apply.
Programme Description
Sustainable energy services is one of the key issues for humanity, and the complete environmental footprint need to be considered for the service delivered. The master’s programme “SELECT — Environomical Pathways for Sustainable Energy Systems” starts from the concept of basic renewable energy sources and establishes the pathways towards a future sustainable energy system. Here, the target is minimal environmental impact of any kind throughout the whole conversion chain, from one of the three primary energy sources (sun, moon, geothermal) to the final energy services delivered to mankind. SELECT aims at delivering education for high competency and quality engineering skills in the field, including industrial interaction throughout the programme.
After completing SELECT, the graduates should be prepared for a direct industrial engagement. This is ensured through training in:
Career Prospects
The SELECT programme gives its students the best possible foundation for a career in research and development in the sustainable energy field. Graduates will be able to analyze, develop and participate in those advanced innovations needed to realize a sustainable path towards our future energy system. In addition, the built-in mobility enhances the cultural awareness and adaptability of all its participants. These are highly sought-after attributes in the global job market of today.
Graduates of SELECT will be employable within a wide range of industries, possess the potential to start their own innovative businesses or to continue their studies towards a PhD. SELECT graduates are expected to provide strong leadership in many areas of importance to sustainability and benefits for humankind.
SELECT gives a two semester advanced introduction to the overall environomical pathways concept at one university (KTH), followed by a specialisation at the other participating universities (Politecnico di Torino, Helsinki University of Technology, Technische Universiteit Eindhoven, and Technical University of Catalonia) in the third semester. In the fourth (final) semester the students can perform the MSc thesis in an industrial setting in common supervision with researchers from any of the participating universities.
The programme offers extended industrial contacts as part of internships and seminars/workshops. The curriculum is highly integrated, first of all regarding to student and teacher mobility for certain common lectures, but also related to the extended use of remote teaching by the specialist teachers at all five universities, in conjunction with "face-to-face" and "virtual" interactive workshops and project courses. The programme offers a unique, modern and highly interactive learning material which enhances the student learning process.
Year 1 (KTH)
Year 2 (partner universities)
Environomical Pathways to Sustainability (partly remote lecturing, KTH responsible)
Areas of specialisation (min. 23 ECTS):
Master Thesis (any location, supervised by consortium)
Master's thesis
The thesis will be performed during the 4th term, either in industry or at an institution. The topics for Master´s thesis are in the field of Energy for the Future and are carried out at a company or partner university.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

To qualify for the SELECT programme applicants need to fulfill the admission requirements based on previous studies, English proficiency and documentation.
1. Previous studies: A completed Bachelor's degree
Applicants must have completed a Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Chemistry or Engineering (e.g. Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or Electrical Engineering) encompassing a minimum of 180 ECTS credits or equivalent academic qualifications from an internationally recognized university. Applicants must furthermore have taken at least 10 ECTS credits in the area of thermal science (e.g. fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, heat transfer). The average grade must be at least 75% of the scale maximum.
Conditional acceptance
Students in their final year of undergraduate education may also apply and if qualified, receive a conditional offer. If you have not completed your studies, please include a written statement from the degree administration office (or equivalent department), confirming that you are enrolled on the final year of your education and giving your expected completion date. If you receive a conditional offer, you should present your degree certificate to the Admissions Office before enrollment at the latest. Applicants following longer technical programmes and who have completed courses equivalent to an amount of 180 ECTS, will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
2. Language requirements: Proof of English proficiency
Applicants must provide proof of their English language proficiency, which is most commonly established through an internationally recognized test.
IELTS
A minimum overall mark of 6.5 is required, with no section lower than 5.5 (only Academic Training accepted). IELTS-tests are verified online by KTH admissions office, sending a photocopy of your test together with your application documents is therefore sufficient.
