The course has been meticulously developed to ensure close alignment with the required professional competencies of a Chartered Engineer, as defined by UK-SPEC.
You will attend the University during 8 weekends spread across 2 academic years. During each weekend, you will receive a series of seminars, lectures and tutorials from highly respected academic and industrial experts, in the comfortable surroundings of a local hotel. You will also benefit from a range of cutting edge research laboratories and other top facilities.
Structured coursework assignments will encourage you to demonstrate how the application of this taught knowledge can improve your abilities within your own working environment. This programme does not include any formal written examinations.
The programme has been structured to deliver a broad range of professional and managerial concepts through a spectrum of exciting modules. These modules are weighted equally, each with a value of 15 credits.
Professional Development Audit: Structured self-evaluation to identify the most effective routes to achieve a skill-set matched to UK-SPEC requirements.
Risk & Hazard Management: Techniques to assess low and high-risk engineering environments, taking due consideration of all associated hazards.
Quality & Reliability: Introducing the concept of Total Quality Management, and appreciating the importance of reliability cycles
Professional Skills: Understanding the wider legal and environmental responsibilities of a professional engineer.
Analytical Techniques for Engineers: Identifying suitable techniques to ensure that investigations achieve relevant numerical solutions.
Condition Monitoring and Forecasting: Appreciating the potential advantages provided by a range of monitor techniques
Management in Industry: Discussing the key principles in successful resource management within Industry
Research Study: Performing a focussed literature review, to become expert in an area of interest prior to the dissertation stage.
You will progress to the ‘dissertation stage’ upon completion of these 8 modules. The 60 credit dissertation module provides the opportunity to conduct an industrially relevant research project, under the close supervision of an experienced academic colleague with aligned research interests. Alternatively, you may opt to study only a selection of the above modules, which would be rewarded with either a postgraduate certificate (PGCert; 60 credits) or diploma (PGDip; 120 credits).
Upon enrolment at Cardiff University, you will immediately be assigned an Academic Supervisor, who will be your first point of contact within the School, and an Industrial Mentor, who will assist with your activities in the work-place.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Accredited First Degrees: Prospective participants holding a relevant, accredited first degree (2i or 1st Class) should typically have at least 2 years post-graduation experience.
Non-accredited First Degrees: Prospective participants holding a relevant, though non-accredited first degree (2i or 1st Class) should typically have at least 5 years post-graduation experience.
Other Relevant Qualifications: Prospective participants holding other relevant qualifications are equally welcome to study MSc Professional Engineering once they have achieved at least 7 years post-qualification experience.
