The programme develops sound interior design abilities with an architectural orientation. The aim is to create a sensibility towards the efficiency of an environment alongside its communicative value. Both cultural disciplines and the technical teaching meet in the interior design classes, workshops developed with the involvement of top-level professionals and firms. The subject of the work is not only residential spaces but also hotels, offices, temporary architecture, retail and shop design. Every project goes through the development of different stages: concept design, layout, the study of volumes and surfaces, lighting and furniture design. It is an absorbing experience that helps the student to consolidate presentation techniques and professional tools. Upon selection the Master’s admits candidates with a degree in Interior Design, Architecture and Industrial Design or their equivalents; students from Furniture, Design, applied arts and interior design courses; candidates who have gained significant professional experience in the field.
Duration
Interior Design Master's course lasts for one year (from October to December, with a summer break in august). There will be a minimum of 20 hours of lessons per week. Attendance is compulsory and full time

At the end of lessons, students will start an internship in companies or studios of the sector

Teaching
The Master’s course consists of theory lessons, workshops and interior design courses. In this way students will acquire professional skills combined with a methodological awareness of the entire design process.
Professional openings
Interior Designers may work on the layout of an environment including structural aspects, furnishing and decoration, brand communication. Professionals frequently deal with residential interiors but also with public spaces such as restaurant, hotels, offices. The contract bussiness is increasingly important for interior design firms in Milano. Being the city a world-class shopping mecca, retail design have gained a massive attention too. The interior designer should have an enquiring and receptive mind; be aware of latest trends; stay up to date with new solutions, materials and technologies; keep a close eye on social and cultural trends. He may work in design companies or in architecture and design studios.
SPD has received several important recognitions like Compasso d'Oro Award, Medaglia d'oro at the 10th International Triennale Exhibition in Milan, Civic Diploma of Merit from the City of Milan. Several important designers like Stefano Giovannoni, Piero Lissoni, Denis Santachiara, Giulio Cappellini, Simone Micheli teach and make lectures in SPD.
Scuola Politecnica di Design has also collaborations with big enterprises where design and visual communication are strategic factors: Microsoft, Poltrona Frau Group, Cappellini, Ikea, Nava, Natuzzi, Heineken, Alfa Romeo, Lamborghini, Audi, Artemide and others. It is essential, for SPD, to offer a complete and very high qualified preparation to students and a direct contact with enterprises and design world.
