Cultural learning is a concept of learning that recognises how knowledge is acquired outside schools and colleges through 'cultural spaces' and across diverse informal settings including volunteering projects, community centres, libraries and museums.
Cultural learning has become central to the work of educators and those working in the cultural industries. This programme is aimed at professionals working in schools, libraries, museums, heritage organisations, local authorities, community projects and the third sector.

Careers

The programme will help professionals working in schools, libraries, museums, heritage organisations, local authorities, community projects and the third sector, giving them insight into critical thinking and the concept of cultural learning and its wider implications for society.

Key facts Type of Course: Taught, continuing professional development

Duration: MA: six modules and dissertation normally within two years part-time; PG Diploma: six modules within two years part-time; PG Certificate: three modules within one year part-time

Start date: September 2011

Contents

This programme offers three compulsory first year modules: Connecting Histories: an Introduction to Cultural Learning; Working Across Languages, Cultures and Disabilities; and Race, Equality and Diversity. In the second year there is one more compulsory module, Research Training, and two other optional modules: The Science of Childhood; and Education, Work and Identity. Students can alternatively replace modules 5 and/or 6 with other modules drawn from a menu offered by other Colleges in the University which address Cultural Learning from different perspectives.

Learning and teaching

Modules are taught one per term, generally on weekday evenings over ten three-hour sessions, and are assessed in a variety of ways.
