This programme is intended for teachers of English who wish to upgrade their professional standing. It is most suitable for teachers whose interests lie mainly in classroom practice. We also offer a distance learning programme over 2.5 years.
The MA in TEFL/TESL is intended for teachers of English who wish to upgrade their professional standing. It is most suitable for teachers whose interests lie mainly in classroom practice. Students on the MA in TEFL/TESL take six taught modules. The first three modules are taught in the September–December term, the other three modules are taught in the January–March term. Students also write a 12,000-word dissertation (from April to September).
In addition, there are two non-assessed components in the programme. All students take a short course - Introduction to the Bank of English – which introduces them to the 400-million word Cobuild Bank of English corpus, an invaluable collection of authentic language data against which theory, intuition and pedagogic materials can be measured. Students who have not previously been educated through the medium of English also have the opportunity to take a course in Academic English.
Key facts
Type of Course: Taught, continuing professional development
Duration: 1 year full-time
Start date: September 2011
The core modules are as follows:
* Introduction to Language This includes aspects of lexis, pedagogic grammar. You are provided with the tools to analyse, compare and discuss samples of authentic English.
* Syllabus and Materials Design This module examines different types of language syllabus and different ways of evaluating classroom materials, considering how syllabus and materials (like typical course books) can be adapted to meet the needs of specific students in particular contexts. It also aims to demonstrate how particular activity types can be used to exploit practically any authentic text, and to look at how these activities can be combined to form a ‘schema’ (i.e. a properly structured lesson or series of lessons).
* Second Language Teaching and Learning This module includes the study of methodology and of second language acquisition. We look at current research into how languages are learnt, and the implications for language teaching methodology. We also examine different approaches to language teaching, especially Communicative Language Teaching. You are asked to relate the theory to your own experience.
* Research Methods in Applied Linguistics This module includes a course in methods and approaches to research in Applied Linguistics. In addition, you will select one option from the range on offer and apply what they have learned to a small research project.
* Two optional 20 credit modules You will select two options from the range on offer. You may also if you wish sit in on another option without being assessed in it. The teaching of specific options will depend, to some extent, upon staff availability and levels of student interest (for example, it would not be viable to run an option for just one student), but options would commonly include:
* • Bilingual Dictionaries and Terminology
• Business English
• Computer Assisted Language Learning
• Corpus Linguistics
• Discourse for Teachers
• English as a Global Language
• English for Specific/Academic Purposes
• Forensic Linguistics
• Genre Analysis
• Intercultural Communication
• Language and Literature
• Language Teaching Observation and Practice
• Management of Innovation
• Media Literacy
• Teacher Training
