About the course

If you are already working in crime enforcement, or you have an interest in the legal implications of criminality in the digital age, this masters degree is for you. It focuses on the recognised and accepted investigation methods and the analysis techniques required to prove them.

Using our skills and expertise in digital investigation you will develop the techniques and knowledge you need within the justice system to address and deal with cybercrime and e-investigation.

Cybercrime is a continually evolving discipline that addresses the increase of computer technology in criminal activity. Whilst studying this programme you will face the challenges of both understanding complex technology and the principles and practice of criminal investigation. You will be equipped with the skills and theoretical underpinning required to assist in the investigation of crime which involves the use of technology and digital media.

You will become acquainted with the legal, ethical and professional considerations which must be taken into account during investigations. These are the skills which will enable you to recover and investigate evidence more effectively. You will be guided to continually develop your research skills which will help you keep up to date in this rapidly changing discipline and you will be trained to acquire the skills of effectively and efficiently presenting evidence in court. You will also cover the practical and academic aspects of cybercrime, including the key skills needed to pursue a career in cybercrime detection and investigation.

The course explains the need for proper investigation and illustrates the process of locating and handling evidence. How to effectively manage a forensics investigation and how to preserve and present evidence will be covered, and you will develop your skills and proficiency to respond to many types of situations as you'll have hands-on training and a strong incident response foundation. You will be equipped with the knowledge, tools, and practical experience needed to investigate and respond effectively to computer crime and other incidents or development needs within your specific organisation

The core modules build a strong foundation in key areas. This is enhanced by optional modules where you can choose subjects based on your interests and career aspirations. This flexible approach means the programme appeals to a wide range of students with different backgrounds, experience and jurisdictions, so you are exposed to different points of view, enhancing your experience on the programme and building a solid foundation in both theory and practice.

If you study on campus you will use our custom built court room, and you will be given the opportunity to pit your wits against qualified advocates.

If you choose to study online you can study whenever it's convenient for you - wherever you have access to the internet.

Throughout the programme you will develop your skills through a process of self-assessment, action-planning, acquisition of relevant skills and experience, and reflection and review.
