In the field of Molecular Biology you study how different molecules within the cell interact and how the genetic information can be transferred from DNA to proteins. The structure of genes and proteins as well as the understanding of their function and regulation are also studied.
Molecular biological and biochemical techniques are used to analyze and engineer genes and proteins. The techniques can be applied within the fields of medicine and biotechnology to e.g. identify diseases and genetically engineer plants and animals.
During the first semester of the Master program you will study advanced courses in the following subjects: infection biology, biotechnology, and genetic engineering. Advanced on site laboratory facilities are frequently employed for DNA/protein analyses such as PCR amplification, mutagenesis, sequencing and protein expression. Computational resources are also used for molecular biological and bioinformatical analysis and database searching.
The program is concluded with a thesis work (30 ECTS credits) in the last semester. During the thesis work, you will expand your theoretical and laboratory knowledge. The thesis work is done individually under the direction of supervisors qualified in the field.
The program started in January 2004 and since then the students that passed the courses has got excellent comments and references from the laboratories where they realized their thesis projects. Most of these students got international PhD-student positions or other jobs soon after finishing their thesis work.
If you have any problems with the application process, please feel free to contact the study program coordinator through e-mail.
The first semester involves in-depth research oriented studies in Molecular Biology and its application in genetic engineering, biotechnology and infection biology. Advanced and independent laboratory work is a prominent part of the studies.
The second semester consists of a 30 hp master degree project where the student independently shall apply his/her acquired knowledge to solve a relevant research problem in Molecular Biology.
The study programme comprises the following courses:
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
