Location of Newcastle University

The MLitt incorporates a formal research training component where you will develop your research skills and methodologies (20 credits). You also complete a number of detailed research assignments chosen according to your interests and experience (80 credits), and undertake a dissertation of 16,000–24,000 words consisting of a sustained piece of original research (80 credits). Study consists mainly of seminars, tutorials and independent learning supported by research training.

Dissertation supervision is available in the following areas: landscape archaeology; material culture, economy and technology; bodies and identity; later prehistory; Classical and Byzantine archaeology; medieval and post-medieval archaeology.

You may also attend lectures and seminars for the following taught postgraduate modules (without assessment): Neolithic Europe; historical archaeology; technology in the ancient world; advanced seminar in artefact studies; practical artefact analysis; Bronze Age Europe; understanding metalwork - an introduction to use-wear analysis; graduate seminar in Roman archaeology; graduate seminar in Byzantine archaeology; Early Medieval Britain and Europe. It is also possible to take a range of undergraduate modules.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Requirements

You should normally have a good upper-second-class (2.1) Honours degree or higher in an appropriate discipline, or an international equivalent. Applicants whose first language is not English require IELTS 7.0, TOEFL 100 (Internet-based) or 600 (paper-based), or equivalent.
