The transatlantic relationship between North America, Britain and Europe will be the focus of significant debate in the future. This programme provides students with a transatlantic understanding of Atlantic cultural and political relations. Through comparative study it examines the implications of globalisation and post-nationalism for the interactive relationship between cultures conjoined by the Atlantic territory.

The programme brings together scholars and students in the disciplines of history, literature, politics and film.

There are four pathways of study:

* Literature and Film
* US Foreign Relations
* Film/Television Studies
* Global Histories

The programme consists of courses in your chosen pathway, complemented by a required course in Research Skills and Methods, and elective courses from the full range of disciplines within the department. It comprises six module courses and a 12,000-word dissertation.

Contents

This postgraduate programme brings together scholars and students in the disciplines of history, literature, politics, and film studies. There are specific pathways of study in the M.A.: Foreign Policy, Film and Literature and Film Studies. The M.A. is available as both a full-time (12 months) and a part-time (24 months) programme. It consists of six module courses and a 12,000 word dissertation.

Students register for the degree by selecting a pathway that allows them to select from a range of courses organised under a theme.

Pathways

US Foreign Policy

he pathway in Foreign Policy considers not only the historical and current issues in US Foreign Policy but puts this study in the context of ideology, media and culture, as well as 'orthodox' geo-political concerns. The pathway leader is Professor Scott Lucas, who is a leading specialist in US Foreign Policy and Intelligence Services. The Department's approach to Foreign Policy seeks to go beyond standard debates amongst US based academics to provide a new interpretation that is of contemporary relevance. Successful students should be prepared for further academic study at PhD level or for a career with an international dimension in politics, Civil Service, business, and other fields.

Film StudiesThe pathway in Film Studies allows students to develop a specialism in American film. In their first semester students take core courses in Film Theory and in Research skills, together with further option. In their second semester students chose from a range of options including Death and the Moving Image, and Cold War film. The pathway leader is Dr. Michele Aaron, who has established an international reputation for her work in film and television studies.

Film and Literature

The third pathway is Film and Literature. This pathway is co-taught by staff in the departments of American and Canadian Studies and the Department of English. Students are able to select from a wide range of options offered in these departments in order to build a programme of study. The pathway leader for this course is Dr Sara Wood.

All three pathways of TransAtlantic Studies consider relations between different countries and different communities to be a vital part of the course. Students are thus encouraged to think beyond American Studies and considers notions such as Anglo-American Relations, Euro-American Relations, North American Studies, Black Atlantic Culture, Migrant Communities, Comparative Urbanism, Women and Internationalism. We invite applications from all interested students who already have a good undergraduate degree, or who are likely to gain one in the near future, and from practitioners and professionals who seek further academic experience and qualifications.
