This programme is designed to introduce you to the state of the field in current research on Ottoman history, cultural studies and allied disciplines. It also provides appropriate training in the use of original sources, both narrative and documentary, in Ottoman Turkish.

In addition to developing professional skills in identifying and analysing key methodological and interpretative trends in Ottoman Studies, you gain experience in carrying out original research using primary sources. The course may be taken as a self-standing degree or as the first stage of research training towards the three year PhD programme in Ottoman Studies.

The programme consists of 60 credits of coursework, which may be accumulated from any combination of the modules listed below, and a dissertation of 20,000 words, worth 120 credits. Therefore, the research project that results in your dissertation forms the core of the degree and we recommend that you discuss your proposed research project with a potential supervisor before applying - explore the full range of academic research interests of individual staff.
