Learning Outcomes Students graduating from the programme will possess these qualities:

Strong background in the science underlying emerging fields of biotechnology Ability to approach the technology transfer problem equipped with the skills to analyse the problem in scientific and practical terms

Understanding of how technology can be applied to ameliorate or solve, pressing real-world biological problems

Ability to conduct practical biotechnological experimentation

Ability to think about the future development of biotechnology

How You Will Be Taught The course lasts 12 months and involves two semesters of taught courses ending with examinations at the end of term (December) and during the first week of the summer term (April). Students take a total of 60 credits in the Semester One and 60 credits in Semester Two.

Provided that students have fulfilled the necessary academic requirements they spend the summer carrying out a research project or an industrial placement which is allocated an additional 60 credits.

An MSc in Biotechnology requires a total of 180 credits and lasts 12 months.

A Diploma in Biotechnology requires a total of 120 credits and lasts 9 months.

Requirements

Students should possess a UK University undergraduate degree or its equivalent outside the UK (usually at least a 2:1 honours degree or its equivalent).

Candidates are expected to possess a strong background in one or more of the following areas: biotechnology, biochemistry, molecular biology and the related sciences. Engineering, particularly bio-engineering, physics, mathematics, or other backgrounds will also be considered on a case-by-case basis.
