This programme includes a research methods module, a wide-ranging module on the Critical Approaches to the History of Art, as well as a specialist subject and an additional optional module on a period or theme. You will also research and write a 12,000-word dissertation. The MA also offers a further exhibition module, which introduces you to museum studies and the skills required to curate an exhibition.
You are asked to curate an exhibition as part of a team in order to complete this module and have the opportunity to co-author and co-edit an accompanying catalogue. Specialist subjects and options vary from year to year, so please consult the department for more information.
The Department of History of Art is located in the Barber Institute, which houses the Barber Institute gallery. This is an excellent and representative collection of post-medieval European art. It includes paintings, engravings and drawings by such artists as Rembrandt, Van Dyck, Veronese, Picasso and Magritte, as well as an important collection of 19th-century painting by artists such as Monet, Manet, Degas, Gauguin, Turner and Whistler. This is a valuable and convenient teaching collection which all members of staff use on a regular basis.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
