The financial services industry has increasingly become aware of the importance of managing risk - especially since the onset of the global credit crisis. Risk management within financial services institutions involves credit risk, liquidity risk, market risk and increasingly - operational risk. For financial services regulators, it has come to mean adopting risk-based supervision. The programme is intended for graduates who want to pursue a career in the financial services industry, go on to further study and those with professional qualifications or industry experience who wish to increase their knowledge and expertise.

Glasgow Caledonian University has been named a Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment (CISI) Centre of Excellence, the first specialising in financial services operations and risk. The University joins an elite group of just three universities outside London selected by the institute for their demonstration of leadership in academic education.

Designation as a Centre of Excellence means that students graduating with an MSc in Financial Services, Risk and Operations proceed to take an online module in Integrity and Ethics and are then eligible to be awarded the CISI's Diploma in Operational Risk. In addition, the university's students can compete for the CISI's annual Stephen Cooke Award, as well as the institute's other CISI scholarships.

The MSc is an ideal stepping stone to gain employment in the rapidly growing area of risk management with job opportunities in the sectors including areas such as regulation and compliance, credit, market and interest rate risk management, investment management and international and domestic strategies management.

Alternatively, graduates from the programme may wish to undertake further study to MPhil or PhD level.
