The programme consists of a number of course modules covering advanced topics in software development. The streams provide the opportunity to specialise in a specific area.
Distributed Systems Application Development The Distributed Computing stream provides opportunities to investigate and critically appraise the techniques used to develop Heterogeneous software software systems which utilise a range of distributed technologies. Students taking this stream are likely to gain employment developing applications which run on computer networks that are run on computer networks that are country and continent wide. This stream is underpinned by the research work carried out by the Distributed and Persuasive Systems Group.
Web Systems Application Development This stream seeks to provide opportunities to investigate the technologies used to build server-side web applications and to critically appraise existing and emerging technologies used in online purchasing applications, business to business applications and online entertainment. Students taking this stream are likely to gain employment developing server-side web applications which are highly scaleable and require the skills covering a number of web technologies. This stream is underpinned by the research and consultancy work carrier out by the Distributed and Pervasive Systems Group, as well as the Multimodal Interaction groups.
Mobile Application Development
The mobile computing stream provides opportunities to investigate and critically appraise techniques for developing applications for mobile devices such as mobile phones, global positioning systems (GPS) and Personal Digital Assisstants (PDA). Students taking this stream are likely to gain employment developing applications for tomorrow's mobile devices. This stream is underpinned by the research and consultancy work carried out by the MUCOM and Multimodal Interaction groups.
Core Modules: Advanced Software Development, UML Modelling and Design Patterns, Research studies, XML Technologies, Databases Systems Development 2. In addition, students on a particular stream study additional 2 modules as indicated below.
Distributed Systems Application Development Stream: Distributed Systems; Pervasive Middleware and Services.
Mobile Application Development Stream: Mobile and Ubiquitous Computing; Advanced Mobile Device Programming.
Web Systems Application Development Stream: Web Tier Development; Business Tier Development.
Students may choose their additional 2 modules from more than one stream, subject to timetabling. Successful students who take this route would then gain an award with only Advanced Computing in the title.
Assessment: Either 100% coursework or a combination of coursework and written examination, depending on the module or content.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Normal Admissions Requirements:
- An Honours degree from a UK university or a recognised acceptable overseas institution in Computing or cognate discipline with high computing content. Potential students must have good programming skills in a high level object oriented programming language.
- A degree in any discipline together with significant computing and high level object oriented programming experience. Applicants must have the prerequisites required for the modules in their chosen stream and will be expected to demonstrate a level of experience and programming capability equivalent to that studied at Computing degree level.
- An Honours degree or professional qualification in any discipline together with Java 2 Certified Programmers qualification or equivalent programming experience.
