The syllabus includes an integrates systems approach to the study of disease in Pathology modules and incorporates work-based learning in the form of IBMS Specialist Training Portfolio in the student's specific discipline. In conjunction with the Master's Research Project, this delivers discipline specific elements to the programme, which is otherwise a broad, generic Biomedical Science course.
The inclusion of aspects of Training, Quality and Laboratory Management equips graduates with the necessary skills mix to practise in the professions at a supervisory level.
Applicants to the programme of study must be employed as Biomedical Scientists in an NHS Pathology Service Laboratory to enable the completion of the work-based learning components. This accredited programme provides a solid foundation for hospital laboratory-based employment, progressions through Agenda fro Change bandings and forms part of the requirement for Fellowship of the Institute of Biomedical Science.
Taught modules delivered in year 1 on a day release basis, and online learning module in year 2, work-based learning and a research project in the laboratory of employment.
Assessment: Includes end-of-module exams, student-centred learning exercises, oral presentations and examination, research project report.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

- An IBMS accredited BSc Honours degree in Biomedical Science or Applied Biomedical Science at 2:2 or above.
- An Honours degree in a biological science subject at 2:2 or above, plus additional study as determined on application to the Registration Unit of the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS).
- A professional qualification of equivalent status.
Additional requirements:
- Currently employed as a Biomedical Scientist in an NHS Pathology Service Laboratory.
- IBMS membership for the student desiring to undertake the Specialist Portfolio Module.
- Applicants whose first degree was not delivered in English must attain the equivalent of an IELTS score of at least 7, with no element below 6.5
