The programme takes a multidisciplinary approach to the field of biotechnology reflecting the diverse nature of the discipline. The programme emphasises the importance of research and development and exposes students to the latest advances in both the theory and practice of biotechnology covering molecular and cellular biology, genetics, microbiology, statistics and bioinformatics.
Practical work to allow the development of key core skills has been given a strong emphasis in a number of modules. In addition, students will have the opportunity to undertake a laboratory research project in MSc Biotechnology.
The MSc Biotechnology with Business aims to provide both an in-depth knowledge of the 'science' behind Biotechnology but also an insight into the 'business' of Biotechnology, focusing on the areas of innovation and enterprise.
Applicants with a degree in an appropriate bioscience subject but who do not see themselves as 'bench' scientists can now focus on scientific business skills, including research funding and business funding writing, underpinned by appropriate business and bioscience modules. The project is by a dissertation/business plan on a subject agreed in consultation with academic supervisors.
Students can join either programme option initially and a final decision on the continuing route is taken following interview at the end of Trimester 1.

Trimester 1: Biomolecular Studies; Research Methods for Biomedical Science; Molecular Aspects of Medicine; Microbial Technology.
Trimester 2: Biomolecular Microbiology; Molecular Biotechnology; Integrated Cell Biology or Managing Peformance for Business Excellence (with business); Research Project Planning or Managing Projects for Innovation and Enterprise (with business).
Trimester 3: Laboratory-based Research Project or Research and Business Planning Project (with business).
Assessment: Each module will be assessed individually by a combination of coursework and formal examination.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
