International organisations responsible for improving health on a global basis e.g. World Health Organisation, UNICEF, Food and Agriculture Organisation have identified nutritional health as a major priority for improving health at all levels. Examples at a population level are: health improvement for children, for reproduction, for a healthier workforce, reducing the burden of obesity and at an individual level for those with HIV, chronic disease and persons predisposed with chronic disease.
For this reason, nutrition (clinical nutrition and public health nutrition) is a high priority for improving health in most countries of the world. Most countries' health plans have identified a need to increase capacity of their nutrition workforce, but few have the resources to provide this in country beyond undergraduate level.
The MSc in Clinical Nutrition and Health is designed to address this field of priority. It is aimed at medical doctors, graduates of life sciences (with a strong underpinning in physiology, biochemistry, microbiology, health psychology, food science) and degree level health professionals who want to improve their knowledge of clinical nutrition. It will be of particular interest to overseas students for whom this specialist field of study is often not available in their country of origin.
The MSc research project aims to develop students' research skills, scientific writing skills and consolidate their knowledge base in clinical nutrition and health.
Job opportunities in this area include working in clinical nutrition, public health, local government, food industry, food companies, university and industry research departments, as well as further study.
Students graduating from the MSc Clinical Nutrition and Health do not undertake a placement in the UK National Health Service. Graduates from the MSc are not eligible to register as a dietitian with the UK Health Professions Council. For this reason they are not eligible to work as a dietitian in the UK. However, they may be eligible to work in other countries in the field of dietetics and clinical nutrition, or in the UK as a nutritionist.
