The programme provides training in theory, research and practice of Counselling Psychology, and is supported by a range of placements and professional development activities.
Counselling Psychology is a growing area of applied psychology, and practitioners work therapeutically with a wide range of psychological problems and issues in many different settings, including the NHS, organisations and in private practice. The programme takes as its core model the Person-Centred/Experiential Approach while also paying close attention to the Cognitive-Behavioural Approach.
Students study a range of modules, supported by a minimum of 450 hours clinical practice and a minimum of 40 hours personal therapy.
The programme is delivered jointly by Glasgow Caledonian University's Department of Psychology and the University of Strathclyde's Counselling Unit. There are also occasional intensive weeks and specialist weekend 'schools'.
The programme is accredited by the BPS and is a Health Professions Council approved programme. All graduates of the Doctorate are eligible for Chartership as a Counselling Psychologist and are able to register with the Health Professions Council (the statutory regulator of Psychology in the UK) as Counselling Psychologists.
Students are actively encouraged to locate placements in services relevant to their own interests and career plans.
