The programme delivers detailed information on the pathophysiology, pathology and aetiology of all types of diabetes and the understanding and management of depression, cardiovascular disease, neuropathy, nephropathy, sexual dysfunction, lower limb and foot disorders, eye disease, etc. in patients with diabetes. Nurition, diet, exercise and lifestyle issues relevant to the prevention and management of diabetes, patient education and annual screening are discussed.
Research methods is an integral part of the course, strengthening the students' understanding of their own and other published materials as well as equipping the HCPs with the competencies to take part in active research.
Reflective practice is embedded in all modules but is also specifically taught in a reflective work-based practice module that can be integrated with, or taken in addition to, a dissertation that allows the student to explore an area within the field of diabetes where they wish to specialise or focus.
The course is taught by external consultants from Diabetology, Urology, Cardiovascular Disease, Ophthalmology, Dietetics, Psychiatry, Sexual Health and Pharmaceutics and by expert members of GCU staff in Pharmacology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Dietetics, Biomedical Sciences, Nutrition, Vision Sciences, Psychology, Postgraduate Nursing and Podiatric Medicine, making it multidisciplinary, collaborative and cutting edge.
This course is suitable for Health Care Professionals moving into a career in diabetes care and management or looking for advancement in such a career or to further study, e.g. PhD.
It is possible to undertake the single module, Diabetes Care: A Multi-professional Approach, as a stand alone CPD certificate and gain credits towards a future Master's level degree.
Full-time: One year.
Part-time: Three years.
Trimester 1: Diabetes Care: A Multi-professional Approach; Pathophysiology and Therapeutics of Diabetes; Research Methods for Health Care Professionals; The Lower Limb and Foot in Diabetes - Evaluation of Risk.
Trimester 2: Chronic Complications of Diabetes; Optimising Health and Wellbeing in Diabetes; Nutrition and Lifestyle Management of Diabetes; Reflective work-based learning.
Trimester 3: Project dissertation - diabetes.
Assessment: A variety of assessment methods are used including formal exams, data analyses, oral presentations and essays.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
