The programme is considered a 'broadening' Master's in that the subject matter will be different to the student's first degree, but will be more demanding and require an increased level of study that the first degree. The programme has a January start date and uses a variety of learning and teaching methods, including university-based study, practice education placements and work-based learning which explore the theoretical and practice contexts of occupational therapy in today's society.
This programme provides graduates with eligibility to apply for registration with the Health Professions Council as an occupational therapist. There are job opportunities within a number of settings including NHS and private hospitals, social care, local communities, schools, businesses, prisons, charities, and hostels for the homeless.
Occupational Therapists make a unique and essential contribution to the innovation and development of current and future initiatives within health and social care. Career pathways for occupational therapists can involve working as a practitioner, a manager, a researcher or as a lecturer. Graduates can gain employment in diverse areas such as medical rehabilitation, oncology, mental health, learning disabilities and education.
Five trimesters over 24 months.
Year 1 - Trimester 2: University-based: Occupational Therapy Foundations for Practice; Interprofessional Context of Practice; Challenges to Occupational Health and Wellbeing.
Summer period, Trimester 3: Practice Education; Understanding OT in Practice.
Year 1 - Trimester 1: Practice Education; Investigating Practice Interventions, University-based: Occupation in Health and Social Care; Practice Evaluation.
Year 2 - Trimester 2: Practice Education; Practice Implementation and Evaluation, Universirt-based: Professional Development and Work Environment, Dissertation.
Year 2 - Trimester 1: Dissertation; Organisational Behaviour and Professional Practice.
Note: As the programme has a January start date, it commences in Trimester 2.
Assessment: The assessment of professional knowledge, skills and attributes is designed to facilitate the learners' future intellectual and professional growth. Methods of assessment include essays, practice education assessment and reflective work.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testProspective applicants will normally be expected to possess:
- A Bachelor's degree from a UK institution of first or upper second class standing in health, behavioural or social sciences.
- A degree with relevant pre-professional experience.
- For graduates of non-UK institutions, the equivalent of the above.
- Basic knowledge of statistics which includes an introduction to statistical inference.
All applicants will be considered on individual merit.
Entry routes: Entry route to the programme is is dependent on previous study and or pre-professional experience. Entry routes are either via the Negotiated Learning Module or Recognition of Prior Learning.
