The Masters program in Cultural Diplomacy and International Relations, offered by the Institute for Cultural Diplomacy (Berlin) in partnership with the Dubrovnik International University (Croatia), combines the traditional academic international relations components with a new focus on soft power and cultural diplomacy in contemporary global affairs. The Curriculum, integrating multidisciplinary core requirements with practical training and field experience, and the Faculty will provide students with the knowledge and skills required in a complex global order and with access to a range of experts from the international politics and diplomacy, preparing them for evolving careers in public and private international sectors.
While the study of political science has been a cherished tradition of academia, the developments outlined above demand the identification of entirely new theories and models. An understanding of the challenges faced by the contemporary world requires an interdisciplinary approach; International Relations and Diplomacy should not be understood only as disciplines of Political Science or Political Theory, but must also be interpreted from the perspective of economics, law, and other social sciences.
The key objectives of the MA in International Relations and Cultural Diplomacy is to leave students with a strong foundation in international relations theory and contemporary diplomatic strategies, allow them to explore and examine an area of particular interest, and help them gain practical experience through internships and research studies in relevant international institutions.
Additionally, the program will place a strong emphasis on individual and written work by obliging students to research and compose several seminar works, complete a course in quantitative and qualitative methodology, and successfully write and defend a dissertation. The curriculum will highlight and develop critical thinking, writing and analytical skills, and will integrate multidisciplinary core requirements with practical training, internships and field experience.
An individualized approach to academic work, both within the classroom and in independent study, will be a hallmark of the program and will be guaranteed through small classes, a high level of student-teacher interaction, a mentorship program, and active student engagement in course activities and seminar discussions. Finally, the program will allow students to study with distinguished and renowned faculty from Croatia, Germany, Europe, and across the world, and will enable contact with experts and organizations associated with international relations. Students will be taught and advised by a faculty that has not only distinguished itself in an academic setting, but has been at the very forefront of international economic and political policy making. Graduates of the School of Diplomacy will discover that the curriculum and faculty prepare them for evolving careers in academia and all public and private international sectors.
