The programme comprises 180 credits. Students with a degree in architecture take the following compulsory modules (50 credits): evaluation, analysis and research; approaches to architectural design (1); and approaches to architectural design (2).
Students with a landscape design or other appropriate design subject take the following compulsory modules (50 credits): evaluation, analysis and research; advanced landscape design studio (1); and advanced landscape design studio (2). All students then undertake one of the following 60-credit modules (with the advice of the degree programme director): dissertation or design thesis.
The approach to this programme is characterised by a high degree of interaction with your tutor and the other students. The precise style of teaching depends upon the modules selected, but you will be exposed to design studio teaching, lectures, tutorials, workshops, seminars and project work.

All candidates shall also take optional modules from the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape or elsewhere in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, with the approval of the Degree Programme Director. A minimum of an upper-second-class (2.1) Honours degree, ideally in architecture.
As part of the application process students are required to submit a portfolio demonstrating their design ability and creative flair. The portfolio should contain images from a variety of projects using a range of different media. It is important to provide some explanatory text alongside images but please keep this to a minimum.
Portfolios should be submitted as one PDF document, containing a maximum of 15 pages. Portfolios should be attached as supporting evidence to your online application or can be e-mailed to pgadmissions@ncl.ac.uk. Please note we do not accept hard copy portfolios, only electronic submissions will be progressed. Applicants should be aware, that portfolios will not be returned after review.
Applications from students without an appropriate degree, but who can demonstrate a high level of design ability and other relevant knowledge from work experience, may be considered on an individual case basis.
Applicants whose first language is not English require IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 90 (Internet-based) or 577 (paper-based) or equivalent. Applicants whose IELTS score is between 6.0 and 6.5, or equivalent, at the time of application must complete a pre-sessional course at the University before the programme begins.
