This course was introduced to cater for industry’s demand for highly skilled graduates in advanced areas of analysis, design and manufacture in the automotive industry. Although traditionally this industry has been associated with high volume vehicle manufacture, the nature of the industry has changed over the last decade and is now dominated by automotive component manufacturers and specialist design and consultancy houses. This course provides the range of skills and knowledge required by these organisations.
It is designed to appeal to graduate engineers wishing to upgrade their Bachelors degree to UK Masters level and so gaining specialist knowledge and skills relevant to the automotive industry and for professional engineers already working in the industry to enable future career enhancement by deepening their knowledge and expertise.
Graduates from the School of Mechanical Engineering are highly-employable and are sought after by many prestigious companies. Recent graduates from the School can be found in organisations such as, Crompton Technology Group Ltd, Bombadier Transportation, Depuy International, Bentley Motors Ltd, Jaguar, Nissan Motors, Faraday Packaging Partnership, Airbus, EAS Engineering, Prodrive, Ricardo UK and Ford Motor Company.
You will study a selection of taught modules covering: computational and experimental methods; vehicle design and analysis; automotive chassis engineering; automotive driveline engineering; combustion in engines; mechatronics and robotics applications.
As well as studying modules, you will also undertake a research project, which is chosen by you and undertaken in association with one of the School's world class research groups. A proportion of projects are also formally linked to the design, construction and testing of the Formula Student race car.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

A degree equivalent to a UK upper second class honours (2.1) degree or higher in engineering, a physical science or mathematics.
English language requirements
If English is not your first language, you are required to provide evidence of proficiency in English. You will need to meet our minimum requirements for one of the following recognised English language tests: the International English Language Testing Service (IELTS), the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and the Pearson Test of English Academic.
2012 entry requirements for all masters courses
IELTS: 6.5 with not less than 6.0 in listening, reading, speaking and writing.
TOEFL - Internet based test: 94 with at least 21 in listening, 23 in reading and speaking and 24 in writing
Pearson: 64 on PTE Academic, with at least 60 in each of the skills
