The Department of English at Birmingham is one of the largest in the UK with around 800 undergraduates, 300 postgraduates and 75 teaching, research and administrative staff. It has an excellent research and teaching record and offers expert postgraduate supervision across the historical and conceptual range of English language and literature.
The new MA in English Literature draws on the extensive international research expertise of the English Department. It develops students' critical skills in the field of English literary studies, provides a solid grounding in the key intellectual debates on a range of period and context specialisms, and develops skills required for writing a research thesis.
Alongside a core module in literary research methods, students select two sets of linked modules (four modules in total) from a number of taught modules covering a variety of authors and themes from the medieval period to the 20th century. Each module is examined by a 4,000-word dissertation.
