Literary Linguistics is central to the study and understanding of literature and the media in contemporary cultures, themselves profoundly dependent on information, communication and text.
This programme explores the design and effects of literary texts, using linguistic analysis and principles. You consider the role of grammar, context and genre, and the challenges of literary translation and of narrative adaptations from novel to film. You will also look at three exciting new trends: multimodal analysis, cognitive stylistics and corpus stylistics. Ultimately, you will be able to better understand the multiplicity of communicative decisions involved in great writing.
This programme is of value to those with an interest in the technique of a particular writer or the grammar of a particular genre of writing; to teachers of A level courses with an English Language component; or to anyone interested in a systematic, graduate-level exploration of the linguistic bases of literary expression.
