This joint programme contains two distinct pathways: Pathway one focuses on translation technology and Pathway two focuses on translation and cultural transfer in and between modern European languages and English.
It combines both practical and theoretical elements and therefore also provides excellent preparation for further study at PhD level. A distance learning MA in Translation Studies| is also offered by the Centre for English Language Studies in the School of English, Drama and American and Canadian Studies.
The Centre for European Languages and Cultures (CELC), in partnership with the Centre for English Language Studies (CELS), offers a revised MA Translation Studies programme.
This programme now contains two distinct pathways:
* Pathway one – based in CELS, suitable for students with other language combinations, including Chinese, Arabic, Polish, Greek, and Malay, among others
* Pathway two – based in CELC (with some contribution from other schools, where appropriate), focuses on translation and cultural transfer in and between modern European languages and English
This MA qualification is designed for people who are proficient in more than one language and would like to start a career as translators, for translators who would like to develop their skills in areas such as translation technology and terminology management, and for linguists interested in translation and cross-cultural communication as an area of study. The course combines both practical and theoretical elements and therefore also provides excellent preparation for further study at PhD level.
Our students benefit from the expertise available within the Departments of English, French, German, Italian, Hispanic Studies and the Centre for Russian and Eastern European Studies, and have access to the facilities provided by the Centre for Corpus Research, which holds a large collection of corpora in several languages.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Take testWe welcome applications from candidates with a good Honours degree in English, or its equivalent, to work for PhD or MPhil degrees in all the principal areas of English Literature and Modern English Language.
* IELTS 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in any band.
* TOEFL 580 Paper- based test / 237 Computer-based test.
