Musculoskeletal disorders amongst people who care for others are a major source of concern for employers in all fields of health and social care. Health and social care organisations, hospitals, social service care providers and the growing independent care sector are coming to realise the pivotal importance of having senior members of their team who are equipped with the knowledge and skills to ensure that safe, informed practice is enabled. This programme is designed to meet that need.

Who Will Benefit?
The programme is intended for Back Care Advisers/Manual Handling Co-ordinators within organisations and for self-employed consultants who have responsibility for assessing the risks involved in load movement and advising on the means of eliminating or reducing them. It takes a practical problem-solving approach to manual handling and load movement which is appropriate to the needs of practitioners attending a post-experience programme.
The objectives of the programme are to:
* provide the knowledge and skill necessary for the multidisciplinary role of effectively advising on the problems and risks associated with load movement and manual handling;
* establish qualifications that give national recognition to the holder’s abilities.
The Postgraduate Certificate and Diploma programmes are part-time and modular in structure, and involve a combination of short courses (in three or two-day blocks), self-study and work-based assignments. Learning and assessment methods are tailored to take account of participants’ circumstances and needs.
The Postgraduate Certificate will normally be completed within 18 months of part-time study and the Postgraduate Diploma within 26 months.
The Masters stage is completed by part-time research for a dissertation, usually based on a work-related project. Candidates for the MSc must attend three short courses in research methods and successfully complete their dissertation over a 24 month period.

For the Postgraduate Certificate in Healthcare Manual Handling Management candidates must attend and successfully complete the assessed elements of modules 1, 2 and 3.
For the Postgraduate Diploma in Healthcare Manual Handling Management candidates must successfully complete modules 1 to 6.
For the MSc in Healthcare Manual Handling Management candidates who have successfully achieved a passing standard for the Postgraduate Diploma may proceed to undertake a part-time research project within an area of Healthcare Manual Handling Management.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

* hold a degree from a Higher Education Institution in the UK or Eire; or
* have achieved the academic requirements for corporate membership of a British Chartered professional
institution approved by the University for this purpose; or
