Location of University of Bremen

The postgraduate study programme Master of Science "Geowissenschaften" (Geosciences) promotes state-of-the-art geoscientific knowledge, methodology and complementary skills. It enables graduates to critically assess scientific results and to plan, carry out and evaluate field and laboratory projects on their own responsibility. Emphasis is placed on land-based investigations and specialized techniques opening professional careers in a wealth of current application fields. Specialization is possible in both more applied and more research-oriented disciplines.

Geoscientific expertise is the basis for various career opportunities as in

* Consulting and management of geoengineering projects
* Water resource management, environmental protection
* Waste management, ground decontamination
* Exploration for oil, gas, mineral deposits and building materials
* Careers in natural science museums, public relation management, science journalism and discovery tourism
* Functions in research, education and administration


Contents

Within the first year a wide spread of advanced geoscientific courses is offered. Students can develop an individual profile by choosing three out of the following seven geoscientific core subjects:

* Engineering Geology/Geotechnology
* Geophysics
* Glaciology
* Hydrogeology
* Paleontology/Geobiology
* Petrology
* Sedimentology

A master conference self-organized by students on topics relevant to society and an advanced field training are mandatory during the first year.

In the third semester, a two-month field, media or external project is carried out, followed by a seminar on the conception and publication of research projects. The fourth semester is dedicated to individual Master thesis work. A final colloquium presentation of the thesis project completes the course.

Work practicals

Doing an internship is not required but recommended.

Semester abroad

Students can spend one or two semesters abroad, obtained credits will be recognized provided this is agreed to beforehand.

Students may choose to organize stays abroad themselves anywhere in the world. A Joint Master Program exists in cooperation with the University of Waikato, Hamilton, New Zealand.

Going out in the frame of Erasmus is possible with the following partner universities:

IELTS

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Requirements

* A first degree with a Geo Science focus or closely related fields from a university with a regular value of 180 ECTS points is required.
* The applicant/female applicant must prove German language abilities which fulfil the generally valid conditions of the University of Bremen concerning the German language ability, according to the „Regularity about the verification of German linguistic proficiency at the University of Bremen“ from the 15th August, 2007 of the in each case valid version. The duty to proof is cancelled for applicants who have acquired her university access authorisation or the last graduate degree in German.
* Proof of commonly valid requirements of knowledge of the English language, level TestDAF 4 English level B1 Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The duty to proof is cancelled for applicants who have acquired her university access authorisation or the last graduate degree in English language or at least taught English for 7 years.
* The interest in the department has to be justified in a letter of motivation which is examined by a choice committee used by the board of examiners and is valued with a score by at least 6 points (out of 9). Criteria for the assessment of the writing are the specific reference to the department, the clear statement of own qualification and purposes, important for the evaluation is the connection between career way and department, as well as the correspondence of the study motivation with the accordance of the department.
* If reports and achievements for the study with which the admission conditions are to be proved are ambiguously, the participation in an input exam or in a verbal check can be required by the applicant/female applicant. The result is included in the decision of the administration.

Foreign languages

Requirement is very good command of German as the main teaching language, proven by a TestDaF level 4. Furthermore, good command of English has to be shown, equivalent to level B1 of the European Framework.
