The Department of German Studies at Birmingham enjoys a long-standing national and international reputation and is one of the leading centres in the country for language, literature, history and culture. Research is pursued in its broad social and intellectual context, and you are encouraged to select topics that require knowledge of developments elsewhere in Europe.
Since this inter-disciplinary approach is encouraged, it is possible to arrange joint supervision involving staff from other departments, especially from the Institute for German Studies, and Modern History, giving you access to a broader knowledge base.
The MA by Research programme requires you to prepare a dissertation of up to 40,000 words on a topic of your choice, for which an academic staff member will provide expert supervision.
The PhD – the most advanced research degree – leads to a dissertation of up to 80,000 words on a subject of your choice and under the expert supervision of an academic member of staff.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take test* IELTS 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in any band.
* TOEFL 580 Paper- based test / 237 Computer-based test.
