Language Sciences (= LS) stands for the interdisciplinary cooperation of those disciplines which have a focus on language (e.g.. linguistics and the various philologies). Language offers a rich variety of possible approaches as it combines structural, social, technological and cognitive aspects. With a view to understanding the nature of language, it is necessary to address language in cooperation with as many disciplines as possible. Our students are trained to carry out research work independently. They handle multilingual sets of data adequately and are familiar with the on-going debate in LS.
Our students learn practically how to integrate the various viewpoints of linguistics and its sister-disciplines into a powerful unit.
Area foci/ modules for advanced specialisation
There are four areas of specialisation, namely "Descriptive linguistics and comparative linguistics" (SuS), "Language, Society, Politics" (SGP), "Computational Linguistics and Natural Language Processing" (NLP) and "Language and Cognition" (SuK). The students specialise by chosing at least two moduls (or a maximum of three moduls) from one of these areas of specialisation. The area of specialisation determines the topic of the M.A. thesis. One modul or maximally two moduls have to be studied outside the area of specialisation.
