This degree programme is recognised by the Joint Board of Moderators (ICE, IStructE, CIHT, IHE) as meeting requirements for Further Learning for a Chartered Engineer (CEng) for candidates who have already acquired an Accredited CEng (Partial) BEng (Hons) or an Accredited IEng (Full) BEng/BSc (Hons) undergraduate first degree.
This is a collaborative MSc between Heriot-Watt University’s Institute of Petroleum Engineering, the University of Edinburgh’s School of GeoSciences, and the School of Civil Engineering and Geosciences at Newcastle University. Since Newcastle University has significant expertise in petroleum systems analysis and petroleum geochemistry, our contribution to the programme is supervising those students whose dissertations are in these areas, and teaching selected modules.
The programme starts in October and, with the exception of the field course, is taught at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh. Example modules include: exploration methods; reservoir geophysics; seismic and sequence stratigraphy; petroleum systems analysis; petroleum engineering for exploration; and formation evaluation. The main taught course comprises two 10-week terms, followed by a one-week residential field course in the Wessex Basin (Dorset) and a group exercise in which a real Wessex Basin data set is used to produce an exploration and development plan to UK government standards. For the dissertation you conduct research into a topic relating to the exploration, appraisal or development of petroleum.
