The two-year Master of Science in Applied Earth Sciences is a challenging Engineering Programme for students with wide-ranging backgrounds (petroleum engineering, chemical engineering, geology, geophysics, civil engineering, natural sciences) who are interested in and concerned about sustainable use of the earth’s resources in energy production problems (oil and gas), raw materials technology and geotechnical engineering.
You will be trained as a creative and independent thinker; an engineer with the ability and skills to tackle complex problems. In the first year you will take specialised modules, do lab work and go on a geological excursion. In the second year you will write a thesis under the supervision of a professor. Your last exam will be a defence of your thesis.
The courses and assignments are compiled by specialists who excel in their own disciplines. Many of them have close ties with industry. The study environment is international, with English as the working language. In addition to following the training and teaching programme, students may test practical cases against the scientific knowledge developed by our professors and researchers.
As a small community, AES is flexible with plenty of scope for staff and student interaction. As the programmes are broad-based with a strong international character, graduates can find employment in many industrial and academic domains.
The MSc programme in Applied Earth Sciences (AES) comprises a total of 120 credits in two years. Credits are earned from taught coursework and a research project culminating in a thesis. The programme is in English and consists of four tracks:
Petroleum Engineering and Geosciences consists of a core programme and two specialisations.
The entire course has been structured in close collaboration with industry. It offers targeted coverage of mainstream subjects and ample time to achieve real results in the thesis. The performance criteria are high and the workload is heavy.
Convergence CourseAs the incoming students tend to come from different backgrounds, a six-week convergence course is organised at the start of the MSc to ensure that they are all optimally prepared. This course is tailored to individual needs. Students with a technical background and no previous knowledge of geology or petroleum engineering are very welcome.
The teaching is challenging and the reading list extensive. There is frequent interaction with professors and tutors and a dedicated team of specialists on hand to help students achieve their goals.

Course objective
Resource Engineering is about the total Materials cycle, from Mining and Mineral Processing to Extractive Metallurgy and Recycling. The aim of this course is to enable you to gain a clear conceptual understanding of the technical, design and economic aspects of the processes that make up the Materials Cycle. In combination with Geo-Engineering, the program also offers the possibility to study Environmental Geotechnical Engineering, aiming for students to gain knowledge on mining related geotechnical aspects and environmental aspects of the whole mineral cycle.
Graduates in resource engineering are employed worldwide in resource-based industries (mining, processing, metallurgy, recycling), manufacturing, financial institutions and consultancies. Some sign up for PhD programmes in various parts of the world. In combination

The Applied Geophysics track trains students in all geophysical and related aspects of environmental and engineering investigations and in the exploration and exploitation of hydrocarbon and geothermal energy. Applied Geophysics is part of a joint programme run by TU Delft, ETH Zurich and RWTH Aachen. Applied Geophysics adds an international perspective to your career prospects.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

What is required to be considered for admission to an MSc programme?
1)
A. A good university BSc degree with good grades on the key courses in a main subject closely related to the MSc programme to which you are applying.
Exceptions: Management of Technology, Engineering and Policy Analysis and Science Education & Communication, to which all students holding a technology or science degree may be admitted.

B. A proof that you have nearly completed a BSc programme whose main subject is closely related to the MSc programme to which you are applying.

A BSc Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of at least 75% of the scale maximum, or, when included, the specific requirements defined for the country in which you obtained (or are in the process of obtaining) your Bachelor’s degree
