From October 2009 the Department will offer a taught MA in Music. This Masters programme is suitable either as an additional year of study after an undergraduate degree, or as a stepping stone to postgraduate research (PhD). There are three pathways through the MA: Composition, Musicology and Performance Practice. The programme may be taken part-time over a two-year period.
The MA introduces students to the advanced study of music in an atmosphere of critical analysis, creative thinking, and debate. As well as technical, discipline-specific skills, the MA helps students acquire general, transferable skills such as communication, presentation, critical evaluation, advanced argumentation and independent study skills.

The Composition pathway
This aims to raise your awareness of issues in contemporary western music, to increase your technical proficiency in writing music, and to give you experience of writing a sustained musical argument.
The Performance Practice pathway
This aims to improve your technical proficiency in performance, to raise your awareness of the issues of historically informed performance practice, and to give you, if you choose, experience of performing on a medieval, Renaissance or Baroque instrument.
