The Industrial and Labour Economics (ILE) Group is a highly active research group with a strong focus on applied research around various overlapping themes in the economics of business.

Research strengths
A reflection of the group's research strengths can be seen from a selection of our recent projects:

* The Evolution of the Organisation of Production in a Marshallian Industrial District:
* The Birmingham Jewellery Quarter – a project funded by the British Academy
The Governance of Networks as a Determinant of Local Economic Development – a project funded by the European Science Foundation
* Labour economics – projects on working conditions, trade unions, wages and employment

International networking
The group's international networking activities are centred on the Institute for Economic Development Policy, a joint research and learning centre with the Universities of Ferrara and Wisconsin–Milwaukee.
The Institute for Economic Development Policy undertakes research and teaching in economic development and public policy. A key objective is to bring together business people, policy-makers and scientists to discuss, study, and understand crucial issues in the success of local, regional and national economies.

Links with business and policy communities
The applied nature of our research builds strong contacts between group members and the wider business and policy communities. Group members have links with institutions as diverse as the Institute of Economic Affairs, the European Commission, the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), the University of Groningen Growth and Development Centre, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), and the World Bank.

Opportunities
The ILE Group offers research students a supportive learning environment and actively encourages their participation in conferences, as well as the annual Graduate School, frequent seminar series and young researchers' workshops.
