The Master’s course on Railway Infrastructure Technology is addressed both at graduates of the Bachelor course in the subject at the St Pölten UAS and at graduates of an equivalent study of at least three years at a recognized university** or university of applied sciences within Austrian or abroad. Students may choose between two areas of advanced study: either construction technology or railway operation and systems technology.
The Master’s course on Railway Infrastructure Technology enables students to acquire more detailed knowledge (building on the Bachelor’s course on Railway Infrastructure Technology) of the areas of railway building, track maintenance and line installations, railway operation and systems technology (safety methods, power supply etc.). The “railway system” is treated as an entity to provide optimally understanding and use of synergies within the discipline. The course is addressed at practical issues and provides graduates with the best possible career opportunities in the broader area of the railway industry.

Date of registration: the deadline for applications for the WS 2011/2012 has already passed. However, until 19.8.2011 you may apply for a reserve place that may arise if somebody who has been allocated a place does not take it up.

Specialization and interdisciplinarityFrom the start of the course, students specialize in one of the following two areas. The specialized training represents almost half the total number of ECTS points:
* Railway operation and systems technology
* Planning, construction and technical maintenance of railway infrastructure
Building on knowledge acquired in the Bachelor’s course on Railway Infrastructure Technology, each area of specialization provides students with specialist knowledge. In the third and fourth semesters the students‘ work includes an interdisciplinary project, which acquaints them with complex project procedures in the subject and provides them with training in such procedures. In the fourth semester a diploma thesis is prepared, supported by a seminar.
Educational contentThe course includes advanced information in the fields of engineering, information technology, railway operation and automotive engineering, law, economics and management procedures. The focus is on giving students the required skills for the analysis, planning and implementation of efficient and environmentally friendly transport systems for people and goods on rails.

Advanced information in the areas of procedural law and working with authorities, public procurement law, labour law and industrial safety, project and process management, organizational development and change management, corporate social responsibility and sustainability, handling unusual communication situations, innovation management and research.

Scientific and technical skills relating to construction technologyAdvanced information on the areas of statics, reinforced concrete, concrete and wood construction, structural design, surveying, foundation engineering and hydraulic engineering, track superstructure, bridges and tunnelling
Skills relating to planning, operation and management of railway systemsAdvanced information on planning the construction, transport planning, transport performance, wheel-track systems, scheduling and run cutting, emergency management, demand development, system development, management, economic viability, quality, safety and environment, power supply, news systems, signalling technology and asset development. Practical exercises and project work serve to cement the skills and help students apply their theoretical knowledge to practice. To increase the international competitiveness of the graduates, individual courses are held in English. It is recommended that the diploma thesis be written in English.
