What is Journalism?
Journalism is the timely reporting of events at the local, provincial, national and international levels. Reporting involves the gathering of information through interviewing and research, the results of which are turned into a fair and balanced story for publication, for television or radio broadcast or for dissemination online. It also involves fact-finding, media analysis, opinion writing and commentary.
What is New Media?
The term ‘new media’ describes the emergence of digital, computerised, interactive communication technologies. Interactivity has become a key term for a number of new media use options evolving from the rapid dissemination of internet access, the digitalisation of the media, and media convergence.
The global reach of new media communications technologies has important implications for the practice of journalism and this course focuses on the changing nature of media and journalism communications as a result of the rapid advances in digital technologies.
Aims
To educate students with a wide range of media knowledge, skills and competencies that will enable them to become professionals in the media sector in a programme that ensures a balance between the theoretical and practical elements of Journalism. The multimedia modules of the programme will provide a firm grounding in the theory and practical elements of new media.
