This is a natural progression from our programmes in highway engineering, management and traffic engineering that have gained an international reputation over the past 25 years. The purpose is to provide advanced training for engineers aspiring to higher or middle-management positions in either private or public sector road engineering establishments.
The programmes (MSc, Diploma and Certificate) are suitable for both practising road engineers and civil engineering graduates who want to pursue a career in road management. Programmes are designed to provide current knowledge in management procedures for the planning, appraisal, design, construction and maintenance of road networks. They will be relevant to conditions found in both developed and developing countries. A key feature is flexibility of delivery, allowing primarily UK-based practising road engineers to attend on a part-time basis.
The programme consists of taught modules and a research project. Student development is through a combination of lectures, tutorials, site visits and major and minor projects. Student-centred, computer-based and flexible learning are important elements. Coursework and oral presentations are required for many projects.
The programme is also designed with part-time students in mind, and is formulated specifically to facilitate the career development of individuals working in the roads sector and meet the demands of both the UK and overseas road industry. Part-time students take the same modules as full-time students, but can opt to take the programme over a two or three-year period. To facilitate this, each module is delivered two separate one-week blocks over the course of a semester.
The syllabus includes:
* Financial management
* Research and communication skills
* Construction management
* Road design, safety and the environment
* Road structural design
* Road asset management
* Road economics and administration
* Bridge management
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

More informationThe basic requirement is a good Honours degree in an appropriate discipline (for example, Engineering, Sciences, Geography or Mathematics), and evidence of adequate knowledge of the English language.
